PSA Grading Explained: What UK Collectors Need to Know
PSA is the name most people mean when they say “graded card”. For UK collectors it is also the most effort to reach. This guide explains why PSA slabs carry a premium, what it really costs to get there from Britain, and when the trip is worth it.
PSA is the world’s largest and most trusted card grader, and a PSA 10 is usually the most valuable slab you can own for any card. It grades only in the US, uses one overall grade without subgrades, and its cheapest Value tiers were paused in June 2026. Use PSA for cards where the PSA premium is clearly bigger than the US shipping, VAT and longer wait.
What PSA does
Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA) authenticates and grades trading cards, then seals them in its familiar clear slab with a red-and-white label and a certification number. That number links to PSA’s public database, which records every card it has graded and powers the PSA Population Report: the count of how many copies of a card exist at each grade.
PSA also authenticates autographs through PSA/DNA and runs the Collectors Club, a paid membership that unlocks its lowest-priced tiers when they are open. For collectors, the most important thing PSA provides isn’t the plastic. It is a label that buyers all over the world recognise and are willing to pay for.

PSA’s history and reputation
PSA began grading sports cards in 1991, when buying cards by post meant trusting a seller’s description of “mint”. A consistent, independent grade solved that problem, and PSA quickly became the standard for baseball cards. When the Pokémon boom arrived, PSA was the obvious place to send a Base Set Charizard, and it has dominated Pokémon grading ever since.
PSA has now graded tens of millions of cards. Its parent company, Collectors, has bought SGC and, in December 2025, Beckett, so the group behind PSA now controls a large share of card grading. Its biggest weakness in recent years has been capacity: during demand spikes, backlogs grow and tiers are paused. In June 2026 PSA paused its Value tiers to clear a backlog.
Its reputation is still the strongest in the hobby. Collectors debate PSA’s consistency and its lack of subgrades, but the market votes with its money: PSA slabs sell fastest and for the most.
Which cards does PSA grade?
PSA grades almost every mainstream trading card: Pokémon (English, Japanese and other languages), Magic: The Gathering, Yu-Gi-Oh!, One Piece, Disney Lorcana, Dragon Ball and other TCGs, plus sports cards of every era and non-sport cards. It also grades tickets, autographs and other memorabilia through separate services.
Japanese Pokémon cards are graded routinely and many sell strongly in PSA slabs; see can you grade Japanese Pokémon cards? Signed cards need PSA/DNA authentication, covered in can you grade a signed Pokémon card?
PSA grading prices and service tiers
PSA prices by the declared value of each card: the more a card is worth, the higher the tier it needs. These were the reported US prices in October 2026.
| Tier | Price per card | Max. declared value | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Value Bulk / Value / Value Plus / Value Max | $24.99–$64.99 | $500–$1,000 | Paused since 2 June 2026 |
| Standard | $59.99 | $1,000 | Open, about 90–100 business days |
| Priority | $79.99 | $1,500 | Open, about 70–80 business days |
| Express | $199 | $2,500 | Open, about 20–30 business days |
| Super Express | $349 | $5,000 | Open |
From the UK you also pay tracked, insured shipping to the US, PSA’s return shipping and import VAT on the fee and return postage. If PSA values your card higher than you declared, it is moved to a higher tier and you pay an upcharge. Our PSA submission guide and calculator adds all of this up in pounds.
PSA turnaround times from the UK
PSA quotes turnaround in business days from when your cards are logged in, not from when you post them. For a UK collector the full timeline looks like this:
- Transit to the US: usually about a week with a tracked courier.
- Logging and grading: from a few weeks on Express to several months on Standard.
- Return shipping and UK customs: another one to two weeks.
Grades often appear on your PSA account before the slabs ship, so you can plan sales early. For a wider look at waiting times, read how long does card grading take?
How to send cards to PSA from the UK
You have two routes:
1. Submit directly
Create a PSA account, build an online submission, print the form and post the cards to PSA in the US. Pack each card in a penny sleeve and a Card Saver I semi-rigid holder (PSA prefers these to top loaders), then send it tracked and insured. On the customs paperwork, describe the parcel as trading cards sent for grading that will be returned. When the slabs come back, you normally pay UK import VAT on the grading fee and return shipping only.
2. Use a UK group submitter or PSA dealer
A group submitter bundles many collectors’ cards into one shipment. You post to a UK address, pay one fee and let them deal with customs. It costs a little more per card, but saves hassle for small batches. Choose an established submitter with clear terms and reviews.

PSA’s grading scale explained
PSA gives one overall grade from 1 to 10. Half grades exist from 1.5 to 8.5, but there is no PSA 9.5: a card is either a PSA 9 (Mint) or a PSA 10 (Gem Mint).
| Grade | Name | Centering (front / back) |
|---|---|---|
| 10 | Gem Mint | 55/45 / 75/25 |
| 9 | Mint | 60/40 / 90/10 |
| 8 | NM-MT | 65/35 / 90/10 |
| 7 | Near Mint | 70/30 / 90/10 |
| 6 | EX-MT | 80/20 / 90/10 |
| 5–1 | Excellent down to Poor | 85/15 or worse |
PSA can add qualifiers such as OC (off-centre), ST (staining), PD (print defect), MC (miscut) and OF (out of focus), which lower a card’s value. A card PSA thinks has been altered comes back as “Authentic” or ungraded. Learn more in what does PSA 10 mean? and PSA 9 vs PSA 10.
Advantages and disadvantages of PSA
Advantages
- Highest resale value and the most buyers for most cards.
- The deepest population report and sales history, which makes cards easier to price.
- A label recognised by collectors and auction houses worldwide.
- Grades almost every card type and language.
Disadvantages
- Grades only in the US, so UK collectors pay transatlantic shipping and import VAT.
- No subgrades, so you don’t learn why a card missed a 10.
- Long waits on cheaper tiers, and tiers can pause at short notice.
- Prices tied to declared value, with upcharges if a card turns out to be worth more.
Does PSA grading increase resale value?
For cards in excellent condition, yes, and usually more than any other grader. The jump from PSA 9 to PSA 10 can multiply a modern card’s price, because buyers pay heavily for the scarcity of Gem Mint copies. Population matters too: a PSA 10 with a small population sells for more than one with thousands of copies, as explained in how grading populations affect card prices.
The catch is that a PSA 8 or 9 of a common modern card can sell for less than the cost of grading it. Check the numbers for your card on its Search Cards price page, which shows ungraded and PSA values side by side.
PSA compared with ACE, CGC, Beckett and TAG
- PSA vs ACE: ACE is faster, cheaper and domestic for UK collectors; PSA is worth more at resale.
- PSA vs CGC: CGC has a London office and a Pristine 10 above Gem Mint; PSA 10s generally sell for more.
- PSA vs Beckett: Beckett shows subgrades and offers the Black Label; PSA is the more liquid label for most cards.
- PSA vs TAG: TAG gives a machine-scored grade and defect report; PSA has far more market history.
Who is PSA best for?
- Collectors grading valuable vintage cards or modern chase cards.
- Sellers aiming at international buyers or auction houses.
- Investors who care about population reports and long-term liquidity.
- Anyone who wants the slab most likely to sell quickly.
PSA is less suited to low-value bulk grading from the UK, where shipping and VAT can outweigh the premium.
Buy smarter before you pay PSA fees
Because PSA costs more to reach from the UK, the price you pay for the raw card matters even more. Search the card on searchcards.co first: compare the lowest live listings with what the card has sold for raw and in PSA 9 and PSA 10, and you’ll see straight away whether grading can pay off. Scan your copy with the pre-grade scanner to estimate its PSA grade, then use the cost calculator to price the full UK round trip before you submit.
Frequently asked questions
Is PSA grading worth it for UK collectors?
It is worth it for cards where a PSA 9 or 10 sells for clearly more than the raw card plus shipping, VAT and fees. For low-value modern cards, a UK grader is often the better deal.
Does PSA have an office in the UK?
No. PSA has no grading office in Europe. UK collectors post their cards to the US or submit through a UK group submitter or PSA dealer.
Do I pay VAT when my PSA cards come back to the UK?
Normally you pay import VAT on the grading fee and return shipping, not on the value of the cards, as long as the parcel was declared as cards sent for grading that will be returned.
Why doesn’t PSA give a 9.5?
PSA uses half grades only from 1.5 to 8.5. Above that, a card is either a PSA 9 (Mint) or a PSA 10 (Gem Mint).
Are PSA Value tiers open?
PSA paused its Value Bulk, Value, Value Plus and Value Max tiers on 2 June 2026 and said it would reopen them in phases. Check PSA’s pricing page for the latest status.
How do I check a PSA slab is real?
Enter the certification number on PSA’s website and make sure the card, grade and label match. Our guide to checking a PSA certification number explains what to look for.
Prices, tiers and turnaround times were checked in October 2026 and grading companies change them often. Always confirm on the company’s official website before you submit. Search Cards is independent and not affiliated with ACE, PSA, CGC, Beckett or TAG.
Buy the card at the right price, predict its grade and work out the full cost before you submit.
