Best Card Grading Company in the UK: ACE, PSA, CGC, Beckett or TAG?
Five grading companies dominate UK collecting conversations, and each one wins for a different reason. This guide compares them side by side so you can pick the right slab for the card in your hand, not the one with the loudest fans.
There is no single best grader. PSA usually gives the highest resale value; ACE is the easiest and cheapest to reach from the UK; CGC has a London office and strict, consistent grading; Beckett is the choice for subgrades and Black Label hunting; TAG suits collectors who want a machine-scored, fully documented grade. Match the company to the card’s value and where you plan to sell it.
How to choose a grading company
Every grading company does the same core job: it confirms a card is genuine, judges its condition on a 1–10 scale and seals it in a tamper-evident case (a “slab”) with a certification number. Where they differ is everything around that job: how much buyers trust the label, how long you wait, how far your cards travel and how much the whole round trip costs.
For UK collectors, four questions settle most decisions:
- Where will you sell it? If the card may go to buyers worldwide, the label buyers recognise everywhere matters most. If you are keeping it or selling in the UK, a UK grader may be the better deal.
- What is the card worth graded? Expensive cards justify slower, pricier but more liquid labels. Cheaper cards are often only worth grading if the total cost stays low.
- Do you want detail? Some companies tell you why a card got its grade (subgrades or an imaging report); others give only a single number.
- How much hassle will you accept? Posting to the US means customs paperwork, longer transit and import VAT on the way back.

Which grading company adds the most resale value?
On most Pokémon and sports cards, a PSA 10 still sells for more than a 10 from any other company. That premium exists because PSA has the deepest market: more buyers search for PSA slabs, more past sales exist to price them, and PSA’s population report is the reference most buyers check.
That does not make PSA the right answer for every card. A premium only helps if it is bigger than the extra cost and wait. A £40 modern card sent to the US can lose money even as a PSA 10, while the same card graded by ACE in the UK may come back in weeks for a fraction of the cost. On the other side, a vintage holo worth several hundred pounds is often worth the trip to PSA, because the difference between labels can be larger than the whole grading bill.
The honest way to decide is to compare sold prices for the same card in each holder. Search the card on Search Cards to see its sold value ungraded and at PSA, CGC, BGS and SGC grades, then check eBay sold listings for ACE and TAG copies.
Which grader is easiest to use from the UK?
ACE is the simplest: it grades in England, so your parcel goes by domestic tracked post with no customs forms and no import VAT. CGC runs a UK office in London that takes submissions in pounds, which removes the transatlantic leg. TAG works through a UK submission partner that handles shipping and customs, with drop-off shops and card-show collection points. PSA and Beckett grade only in the US, so you either post the cards yourself with customs paperwork or go through a UK group submitter or dealer.
When you post to the US yourself, declare the parcel as cards sent for grading that will be returned. You then normally pay import VAT only on the grading fee and return shipping when the slabs come home, not on the value of your cards.
Which grading company suits which collector?
- Building a personal UK collection on a budget: ACE. Low prices, quick turnaround and attractive labels.
- Selling high-value cards to buyers worldwide: PSA. The label with the strongest resale demand.
- Bulk-grading modern Pokémon from the UK: CGC UK or ACE, depending on whether you prefer CGC’s wider international recognition or ACE’s lower cost.
- Chasing a perfect card: Beckett, for the chance of a Black Label, or TAG, for a 1,000-point score that ranks your copy.
- Wanting proof of exactly why a card got its grade: TAG’s imaging report or the subgrades from ACE, CGC and Beckett.
The order that saves the most money: buy low, then grade
Grading profit is mostly decided before your card reaches a grader. If you pay too much for the raw card, even a 10 may not cover it. Use this order:
- Buy the card cheaply. Search it on searchcards.co to see the lowest live listings next to what it has actually sold for, so you know when a raw copy is a genuine bargain.
- Check it before you pay to grade. Run it through the pre-grade scanner for a predicted grade at each company, or use the Card Checker.
- Price the round trip. Put the card’s value and your chosen company into the cost calculator.
- Pick the company using this guide, then follow that company’s step-by-step submission guide on our grading hub.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best card grading company in the UK?
For resale value, PSA is usually best. For convenience and low cost, ACE is the easiest because it grades in the UK. CGC is a strong middle ground thanks to its London office. Choose by the card’s value and where you plan to sell it.
Is ACE or PSA better for Pokémon cards?
PSA slabs normally sell for more and are recognised worldwide, which matters most for valuable cards. ACE is cheaper, faster and avoids customs, which often makes it the better deal for lower-value cards or cards you plan to keep.
Which grading companies have an office in the UK?
ACE grades in the UK and CGC has a UK office in London. TAG accepts UK submissions through a UK partner. PSA and Beckett grade in the United States.
Do I pay import VAT when grading cards in the US?
Usually only on the grading fee and return shipping, as long as the parcel is declared as cards sent for grading that will be returned. Follow the grading company’s customs instructions when you post.
Which grading company is the cheapest?
It changes as companies reopen or pause tiers. Our grading cost calculator compares the full cost of a submission, including postage and VAT, across every company we track.
Prices, tiers and turnaround times were checked in October 2026 and grading companies change them often. Always confirm on the company’s official website before you submit. Search Cards is independent and not affiliated with ACE, PSA, CGC, Beckett or TAG.
