Dice Jar #PGD-027 collector guide

History, version, grading and market outlook for this card.

About Dice Jar

Dice Jar is a Flip Effect Monster, whose effect happens when it is flipped face-up, printed as PGD-027 in Pharaonic Guardian (2003) as a Short Print. It is a Level 3 LIGHT Rock monster with 200 ATK and 300 DEF. Pharaonic Guardian is the Ancient Egypt-themed set of 2003 that brought the Gravekeeper's monsters and Necrovalley, alongside cards such as Ring of Destruction and Don Zaloog. Ungraded, this printing ranks 41st of the 216 Pharaonic Guardian cards we track. The top card is Ring of Destruction at €35.21.

Character and collecting appeal

Rock monsters are usually high in DEF and built to hold the line. Its text is about luck, with a coin toss or a dice roll.

Version and identification

This guide covers the Unlimited printing, without the "1st Edition" text below the artwork. 1st Edition copies of the same card have their own, usually higher, prices. Check the code printed below the artwork on the right: it should read PGD-027. The code PGD-027, without a language letter, marks the original North American printing. European English copies have an E in the code, such as PGD-E027, and are priced separately. It is the Short Print version. Short Prints look like Commons but were printed in smaller numbers. Pharaonic Guardian has one other printing of Dice Jar: PGD-027 1st Edition (€3.09). Each has its own price, so match the code, edition and rarity exactly.

Price history

Today an ungraded copy of this printing sells for about €3.42, a PSA 9 for €18.35 and a PSA 10 for €197.06. Our monthly prices for it go back to September 2021. Over the last 12 months ungraded copies are up 4%, and down 3% in the last month. The current price is its high point on our records. PSA 10 copies have moved up 19% over the same 12 months. Unusually, Unlimited copies currently sell for as much as or more than 1st Edition ones (€3.42 against €3.09).

Grading and population

A PSA 10 sells for 57.6× the ungraded price and 10.7× a PSA 9. That gap is big enough that grading a sharp, well-centred copy can pay for itself. Early English Yu-Gi-Oh! cards often have off-centre cuts and wear on the dark brown back borders, which is why high grades are hard to reach.

Investment potential

In its favour: it comes from the first years of the English game, which are no longer printed; an active market (25 recent completed sales), so it is easy to sell. Treat this as background, not a prediction or financial advice.

Before you buy

Expect to pay around €3.42 for a clean ungraded copy; played copies sell for less, and a PSA 9 costs about €18.35. Ask the seller to show the code PGD-027, the missing "1st Edition" text and the Short Print finish clearly in the photos, as listing titles often mix up printings. Cards from 2003 often show white wear on the back edges and corners, so ask for photos of the back before you buy.
