Byser Shock #PGD-103 collector guide

History, version, grading and market outlook for this card.

About Byser Shock

Byser Shock is an Effect Monster, printed as PGD-103 in Pharaonic Guardian (2003) as an Ultra Rare. It is a Level 5 DARK Fiend monster with 800 ATK and 600 DEF. At its Level it needs one Tribute to Normal Summon. Pharaonic Guardian is the Ancient Egypt-themed set of 2003 that brought the Gravekeeper's monsters and Necrovalley, alongside cards such as Ring of Destruction and Don Zaloog. Ungraded, this printing ranks 55th of the 216 Pharaonic Guardian cards we track. The top card is Ring of Destruction at €35.21.

Character and collecting appeal

Fiends are one of the largest Types in the game, home to many of its darker and more unusual designs. Its text is about returning cards to the hand or Deck.

Version and identification

This guide covers the Unlimited printing, without the "1st Edition" text below the artwork. 1st Edition copies of the same card have their own, usually higher, prices. Check the code printed below the artwork on the right: it should read PGD-103. The code PGD-103, without a language letter, marks the original North American printing. European English copies have an E in the code, such as PGD-E103, and are priced separately. It is the Ultra Rare version. Ultra Rares have a gold-foil name and holographic artwork. Pharaonic Guardian has one other printing of Byser Shock: PGD-103 1st Edition (€6.70). Each has its own price, so match the code, edition and rarity exactly.

Price history

Today an ungraded copy of this printing sells for about €2.67, a PSA 9 for €21.52 and a PSA 10 for €116.72. Our monthly prices for it go back to September 2021. Over the last 12 months ungraded copies are down 3%, and down 8% in the last month. Its highest monthly ungraded value was €8.16 in September 2021, 67% above today. PSA 10 copies have moved sideways over the same 12 months. 1st Edition copies sell for about 2.5× the Unlimited printing (€6.70 against €2.67).

Grading and population

A PSA 10 sells for 43.7× the ungraded price and 5.4× a PSA 9. That gap is big enough that grading a sharp, well-centred copy can pay for itself. Early English Yu-Gi-Oh! cards often have off-centre cuts and wear on the dark brown back borders, which is why high grades are hard to reach.

Investment potential

In its favour: a price well below its September 2021 peak, which some collectors see as room to recover; it comes from the first years of the English game, which are no longer printed; an active market (37 recent completed sales), so it is easy to sell. Treat this as background, not a prediction or financial advice.

Before you buy

Expect to pay around €2.67 for a clean ungraded copy; played copies sell for less, and a PSA 9 costs about €21.52. Ask the seller to show the code PGD-103, the missing "1st Edition" text and the Ultra Rare finish clearly in the photos, as listing titles often mix up printings. Cards from 2003 often show white wear on the back edges and corners, so ask for photos of the back before you buy.
