Neo Genesis Booster Box guide

What's inside the Neo Genesis Booster Box

A sealed Neo Genesis Booster Box holds 36 sealed booster packs from Neo Genesis, the full display a shop would open to sell packs one by one.

1st Edition and Unlimited booster boxes are both listed here, and 1st Edition sells for far more, so check the listing title before comparing prices.

About Neo Genesis

The first Johto set, introducing the Gold and Silver Pokémon along with the Darkness and Metal types. Released on 16 December 2000, it belongs to the Wizards of the Coast era, when Pokémon cards first took off and print runs were far smaller than today. It came out 26 years ago, so most sealed stock has been opened and what is left sits with collectors.

Neo Genesis has 111 cards in its main numbering.

Chase cards to look for

The Neo Genesis cards collectors most want to pull are Lugia, Typhlosion, Feraligatr and Meganium. With 36 packs, a box gives you the most chances at them of any sealed product, though no box is guaranteed to hold any one card.

Our catalogue lists the set's rarest tiers as 35 Rares. Prices for every card are on the Neo Genesis set page.

Is the Neo Genesis Booster Box a good investment?

Sealed Neo Genesis is now a collector's item: very few unopened booster boxes survive, and each one opened makes the rest rarer. Condition and authenticity matter more than anything else at this age. Booster boxes are the sealed product most collectors hold long term, as they are easy to store and to value. Watch the price of Lugia, the set's headline card, since sealed Neo Genesis tends to move with it.

Past prices do not guarantee future ones, and this is not financial advice. Read should you buy sealed Pokémon products? for the pros and cons.

Before you buy

Look closely at the wrapping in the photos. Factory wrap on booster boxes has neat seams, often with Pokémon logos printed on it; baggy, shiny or uneven wrap is a common sign of a reseal. For a Neo Genesis Booster Box at around €226,989, ask the seller for photos of all sides and stick to accounts with plenty of positive feedback. A full box gives better odds than loose packs, and its value as a sealed item is easier to judge (how to value a sealed booster box). For product this old, ask whether it has been checked by an authenticator: fakes and resealed vintage boxes are made to fool buyers. Check whether delivery from ebay.com adds import fees, and store sealed product flat, out of sunlight and away from damp.
