What's inside the Gym Challenge Booster Box

About Gym Challenge

Completed the Gym Leader story with Giovanni and the later badges. Blaine's Charizard is its best-known holo. Released on 16 October 2000, it belongs to the Wizards of the Coast era, when Pokémon cards first took off and print runs were far smaller than today. It came out 26 years ago, so most sealed stock has been opened and what is left sits with collectors.

Gym Challenge has 132 cards in its main numbering.

The cards a Gym Challenge Booster Box can hold

The Gym Challenge cards collectors most want to pull are Blaine's Charizard, Giovanni's Gyarados, Rocket's Mewtwo and Rocket's Zapdos. With 36 packs, a box gives you the most chances at them of any sealed product, though no box is guaranteed to hold any one card.

Our catalogue lists the set's rarest tiers as 20 Holo Rares and 21 Rares. Prices for every card are on the Gym Challenge set page.

Bear in mind these are asking prices rather than sold prices: sellers at the top of the range often accept offers or wait a long time to sell.

Price per pack

At the typical price, each of the 36 packs in a Gym Challenge Booster Box works out at €899.45, compared with €634.29 in a Gym Challenge Booster Pack. That makes it the most expensive way to buy Gym Challenge packs right now.

Is the Gym Challenge Booster Box a good investment?

Sealed Gym Challenge is now a collector's item: very few unopened booster boxes survive, and each one opened makes the rest rarer. Condition and authenticity matter more than anything else at this age. Booster boxes are the sealed product most collectors hold long term, as they are easy to store and to value. Watch the price of Blaine's Charizard, the set's headline card, since sealed Gym Challenge tends to move with it.

None of this is financial advice: sealed prices can fall as well as rise. Our guide should you buy sealed Pokémon products? weighs up both sides.

Before you buy

Look closely at the wrapping in the photos. Factory wrap on booster boxes has neat seams, often with Pokémon logos printed on it; baggy, shiny or uneven wrap is a common sign of a reseal. For a Gym Challenge Booster Box at around €32,380, ask the seller for photos of all sides and stick to accounts with plenty of positive feedback. A full box gives better odds than loose packs, and its value as a sealed item is easier to judge (how to value a sealed booster box). For product this old, ask whether it has been checked by an authenticator: fakes and resealed vintage boxes are made to fool buyers. Compare the total with delivery, not just the price, and store sealed product flat, out of sunlight and away from damp.
